Supporting Weddell Sea Expedition with public live feed

Schools, scientists and the public can track her progress on the BigOceanData live feed on weddellseaexpedition.org

4th December 2018

BigOceanData is delighted to announce its support for the Weddell Sea Expedition 2019, which is about to send the S.A. Agulhas II polar research vessel from Cape Town on a 45-day mission into the Southern Ocean. There it will document the diverse marine life of the western Weddell Sea ecosystem and attempt to locate and survey the wreck of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance, which sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915.

BigOceanData is supporting the charity funding the expedition by supplying a live vessel tracking feed that will allow everyone with an interest in the voyage to monitor its progress as it faces sea ice, sub-zero temperatures and hostile weather. This will serve an important part of the expedition’s broader objectives, one of which is to inspire young people about science, engineering and technology.

“The data that BigOceanData is providing will allow individuals to follow the expedition online, bringing the voyage to life,” said a senior member of the expedition team. “With their accurate, detailed data we will be able to map and follow the vessel that will be leading a pioneering scientific and archaeological expedition into the Weddell Sea. Thank you to BigOceanData for providing the expedition with such efficient and high-quality work.”
